This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Strategic Product Design at the International Hellenic University. The subject of this dissertation is related to the world of toys. More specifically it deals with the intermingling of the field of educational toys and the field of automata mechanisms, revealing and examining their intersection points and areas. An extended research about the educational methods and learning techniques is conducted, along with the study of the properties of the respective toys. This research results in the creation of a list of properties that can be used as guidelines for toy design.
What is more, this project aims not only at designing a toy, based on the combination of the two fields, but it also provides a new way of approaching automata mechanisms. The outcome of this exploration is the application of the conclusions on a design proposal, that addresses the researched matter and attempts to respond to the question:
"How to design an interactive construction kit toy that is based on a revised, innovative version of automata".
