heal.abstract
The aim of the proposed thesis is to examine the associations of ephebes in the gymnasia of Macedonia. The period that will be focused on is the time after the establishment of the roman province of Macedonia (167 BC) up until the end of the 3rd century AD. After an introductory chapter, concerning the institution during the Hellenistic period, the main focus of the study will be on constitutional and administrative aspects, such as the officials responsible for the epheboi and offices held by ephebes themselves. Secondly, we will examine the frame of education provided to the participants of the gymnasium and we will try to demonstrate what kind of education was being provided by the Greek gymnasia (military, athletic etc.). Finally, we will concentrate on the changes that occurred in the education system during the period we are examining.
In order to present these aspects, all available sources will be taken into consideration. The sources that will be examined are mainly literary sources, such as Aristotle who although he concentrates on the institution of ephebeia in classical Athens, he generally provides the theoretical framework for the study of Greek ephebeia. But the main source of information will be derived from inscriptions such as the ephebic catalogues and the honorary decrees issued by the neoi with the collaboration of the ephebes.
