Romanian banking sector is currently facing many challenges, not least the decreasing levels of employee engagement. This study investigates which are the factors that drive employee engagement and which leadership style enhances the employee engagement in times of crisis.
The study is a qualitative research conducted in December 2012 – January 2013, consisting of ten in-depth interviews. The sample was selected from non-managerial employees from three branches of a Romanian bank. The findings reveal that factors such as relation with line-manager, development opportunities, transparent and fair performance appraisal processes and effective communication may enhance employee engagement in times of crisis. Furthermore, this study indicates that there is no specific leadership style that engages employees, but it is the way the manager adapts his leadership style to each employee that drives engagement.
