The effect of the glass ceiling phenomenon is a problem widely researched around the world with
very strong implications within the real economic context of almost every country, regardless of the
power of the local economy. This phenomenon has been spotted in large economic powers such as
USA and Germany, as well as in smaller countries such as Austria and Sweden. The scope of this
dissertation is to explore the gender inequality in top management levels among the 50 biggest
companies in Bulgaria. It represents a multiple case study research that uses especially developed set
of questionnaires designed to cover the major topics that are more commonly referred to in the
conducted studies around the world. The result generated from this research paper has important
theoretical and management implications that build a foundation for future research within the cultural,
economic and social context of Republic of Bulgaria.
