Climate change and the ambition to become independent from fuels like petrol
and coal forced Countries and consequently Military authorities, worldwide, to present
environmental goals, to reduce the use of energy and to intensify the effort for increasing the production of energy from renewable energy sources. One of the goals is to be-
come Net Zero in relation to fossil fuels in both public and military facilities. In Net Zero
the quantity of energy (fossil fuel-based) used in a year, equals the amount of energy
produced from renewable sources in the facility. Nevertheless, although billions of dollars have been spend in Environmental-Energy programs/projects worldwide (including
military forces), the World Total Primary Energy Supply increased from 1971 to 2015 by
almost 2.5 times, Total Final Consumption, more than doubled in the same period and
Annual GHG emissions have increased between 2000–10, with the most important
drivers being Economic and Population growth.
The dissertation provided a review on the implementation of Environmental
strategies-projects-programs on
NATO-US DoD
facilities and an assessment of their effectiveness. Regarding the methodology of research, the dissertation was based on
quantitative research methods and used secondary data not only from fourteen official
NATO, US DOD and Public Agencies reports (Environmental Performance Indicators),
but also used/presented data from a specific ongoing energy program/project in a US
military camp that could eventually become the model of the environmental friendly
camp of the future. Finally, the conclusions present that the environmental strategies-
projects-programs of US DoD
are effective
, with no crucial gaps due the fact that are
steadily achieving their goals
,
in contrast to NATO ones which
are not effective
due to a
lack of cooperation-communication between member states. Probably, these conclusions may contribute to a better evaluation of the Environmental programs/projects in
the alliance.
