the Classical Archaeology and the
Ancient History of Macedonia
at
the International Hellenic University.
The aim of this the
sis
is an
effort to concentrate and analyze
a
ll the relative evidence regarding
the
cult of
Aphrodite in the
area of Macedonia, from the archaic up to
the roman period.
Aphrodite as
the goddess of beauty, love, pleasure and procreation,
had a prominent status in the
Hellenic pantheon and her
cult was popular and widespread among the Greeks.
As far as
Macedonia is concerned
, archaeological evidence related to
Aphrodite has been recovered
in the excavations conducted throughout the area. The cult of the goddess is attested in
Upper and Lower Macedonia as well as in the Eastern part of it.
Despite the shortage of
data, this study intends to illuminate the cultic,
economic and political importance of
religious beliefs
in the area of Macedonia
and
in this context
, Aphrodite’s worship
will be
examined and a comprehensive review will be presented.
