This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Art, Law and Arts Management
programme at the International Hellenic University.
The aim and main goal of this work is to examine and analyze certain aspects of arts
management, namely the correlation of art with cultural diplomacy, the exercise of
soft power, and patronage as a form of corporate social responsibility within the Greek
art world. The focal points for this examination are six cultural organizations active in
Greece presented as case studies.
The cultural organizations studied here are, firstly, international foreign institutes with
an educational and cultural mission, namely the Greek branches of Institut Français
and Goethe-Institut, secondly, foundations established by Greek banks (principally
financial corporations), in particular the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation
and the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, and thirdly, establishments founded
by individual entrepreneurs, specifically the Onassis Cultural Centre and the B&M
Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music. The expected outcome is to
present them and their contribution to the Greek art world.
