heal.abstract
This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Bioeconomy, Law and Regulation Management at the International Hellenic University. The study presents phytoplankton species composition, abundance and biomass measurements that occurred from July until August of the year 2018 in the coastal area of Olympic Beach. Diatoms were the dominant taxa throughout the sampling period. Species of dinoflagellates were also present in high densities. Increased value of biomass was also reported mostly attributed to large-sized diatoms species. Environmental indications such as phytoplankton blooms or high biomass demonstrate the presence of eutrophication and the deterioration of the coastal water quality in Olympic Beach. In order to improve quality levels and obtain a better understanding of the environmental pressures, a long term and enriched monitoring plan would be useful.
