This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Banking and Finance at the
International Hellenic University.
The project is divided into three main chapters. Firstly, a review of the
literature on FinTech is presented exploring its effects on banking. Moreover, it is
crucial to examine the arguments of the economists that debate whether FinTech is a
great opportunity or a huge threat for banks. Also, the evolution of FinTech is
examined by mentioning fields which have altered significantly throughout last
decades. In the second part the case of cryptocurrencies is studied thoroughly. Digital
currencies are assessed in this dissertation analyzing different types of them and their
characteristics. Benefits and drawbacks that arise are mentioned, while in the third
part an attempt is made in order to observe the degree to which citizens in Greece are
aware of and accustomed to cryptocurrencies through the use of questionnaires. The
results of the sample are examined in order to reach some conclusions.
