This dissertation aims to investigate ways that can be used by a museum and generally by a cultural
institution to enable the access to audiences and artists that are usually excluded because of a
physical condition. More specifically it will focus on how digital technology could be applied as an
inclusive practise in art and in a museum environment for engaging people who experience visual
impairment or blindness. The case of Mind’s Eye| Opening Arts to the visually impaired 2019/20”
an initiative by Stela Anastasaki supported by START-Create Cultural Change program and
implemented in collaboration with MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art and CERB (Center for
the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind) will be presented as an example of joining digital
technology and contemporary art together aiming for social inclusivity, equality and access for the
blind.
At last, the research showed that although cultural institutions use alternative and innovative
practices, including digital technology, for engaging the blind there is no a detailed and in-depth list
of the digital technologies that could find their application in the museum environment for this
purpose so there would be an attempt to make a list of them in the hope that it will act as an advisory
tool for the museums.
