heal.abstract
This dissertation was written as a part of the MSc in e-Business and Digital Marketing at the International Hellenic University. These days more and more cities around the world are trying to adopt practices to become more intelligent and smarter. But there is a big confusion what exactly a smart city means and how a city can change their services and operations to start being a smart city. This dissertation tries to clarify what exactly a smart city is by giving some very good examples of already existing smart cities, like Amsterdam, and by analyzing the main characteristics and dimensions that a smart city can have. But in order for a smart city to start existing big data play an important role. So, this dissertation also includes an idea to what big data are, their main characteristics and the best ways to collect them. After this a questionnaire was created to see if the city of Thessaloniki is a smart city and to which fields the city can be smarter. Through the results of the questionnaire the mobility field was by far the most important field that Thessaloniki should improve. And for this reason, an idea for an application which will help the citizens to move around the city was described. Through the business model canvas of the application the key roles and the values from the use of it can be discovered.
