Employee monitoring is not a new concept, but this topic has received significant attention in the past few years. This is partly due to the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic
and the sudden need for companies to adopt a remote work framework. Employers have
always felt the need to keep a close eye on employees in their effort to protect the company‟s assets as well as to gain an insight on their productivity.
Technologies like smart phones or the internet have introduced many distractions and
temptations in the workplace and employee monitoring is an efficient way to tackle these issues. However, employers should take into consideration that reckless use of monitoring methodologies can have a negative impact on employees and, by extent, to the
company. Although employee monitoring is not directly addressed by many laws or
regulations around the world, it is heavily influenced by laws governing privacy and the
employees‟ right to privacy. Employee monitoring is most effective when we strike a
balance between the employee‟s rights and the employer‟s interests.
