This dissertation was written as a part of the MSc in Environmental Management
and Sustainability at the International Hellenic University. Here goes a summary of
the dissertation.
One of the most pressing themes of our times is climate change and environmental
degradation caused by human activity. In the last decades the Governments all
around the world, along with global institutions, international organizations and
NGOs realized they need to take serious action in order to preserve the ecosystems,
mitigate climate change and create a sustainable world that will benefit the global
community and will secure a prosperous future for the next generations. Oneof the
biggest challenges humanity needs to face to achieve its goal, is CO2 emissions
coming from human activity. The goal could be achieved through better education,
to change our perception and habits, and through the implementation of state-ofthe-art technology, which will be beneficial only under a robust legislation
framework in which social inclusion will be a key pillar This dissertation focuses on
the transport sector, the only sector that shows increased CO2 emissions in the last
years, and especially in the European Union area. The policies and the strategies
European Union are implementing in order to reduce CO2 emissions presented,
along with the latest advancements and measures used in the mobility field,
targeting to transform transportation making it more sustainable and viable. The
dissertation conducts a case study focusing on 48 Greek Municipalities and
examining the Sustainable mobility strategy the Municipalities implementing under
the Covenant of Mayors Initiative. Additionally, the most popular CO2 emissions
reduction measuresare detected, as well as their CO2 emissions reduction potential
and their respectivecost of implementation are also presented and analyzed.
