This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Strategic Product Design at the International
Hellenic University.
The present dissertation aims to explore the implementation of 3d printing technology in
primary and elementary education (K-12), in order to propose the design of a new 3d printer for
educational usage. The design proposal is focused on answering mainly the needs of teachers
and students of k-12 education.
The paper starts with a literature review of both 3d printing in education, and the design
features of FDM 3d printers. Mixed research methods, quantitative and qualitative, were used
to extract customers’ needs and expectations of using a 3d printer with children for pedagogical
purposes. The design proposal is presented in the last part of this paper considering the
limitations and further exploration of the subject.
