This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Energy Building design at the
International Hellenic University.
In this research, an attempt is made to assess the energy performance and the thermal
comfort in school buildings in Greece, as well as to analyze aspects that impacts it, such
as shading. A literature review was initially conducted in order to obtain information
from different studies and surveys that are relevant to the present work. It is
investigated the energy performance and the energy efficiency of buildings worldwide
with a focus on school buildings, and in particular those that are in Greece. Then the
predominant typology of Greek school building has been detected and the first high
school of Stavroupoli has been selected as a representative. In the next phase different
simulation scenarios has been applied in two climatic zones, C and B. The results of these
scenarios pointed out the negative impact of overhangs in heating energy consumption
and the reduction of energy demands if it is south oriented.
