heal.abstract
This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Environmental Management & Sustainability at the International Hellenic University. This thesis aims to examine the impact of the refugees’ informal settlements on the sustainability pillars. In this thesis, we will highlight the negative impact of refugees’ informal settlements on the environment; we will address the case of “Al Kassab” informal tented settlement in Saadnayel Bekaa Lebanon, and how the Syrian conflict-affected the area ecosystem in particular. This thesis is based on a specific field work where the methodology used to extract the primary data was the survey questionnaire, live interviews, and field observations. The main question of the thesis is “what are the environmental impacts of Al Kassab ITS, and what were the responses of the related NGOs?”; the results show that the main environmental areas that were negatively affected are as follow land use, soil erosion, sanitation, air quality, deforestation, water, and wastewater. After close observations for the area, several sustainable solutions can be suggested like installing appropriate wastewater infrastructure, replacing the mobile toilets cabin with some sustainable ones, usage the biogas extracted from the wastewater for heating purposes, and installing photovoltaic solar panel farms. Finally, rapid action should be adopted and implemented to reduce the negative impact on both refugees and the host community; otherwise, this neglect can have real harm not only for Lebanon but for all the region.
