This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Energy Law, Business, Regulation
and Policy at the International Hellenic University. Energy is one of the most important
factors for the world economy and the well-being of the world population, because
without it there can be no economic and social progress. The reduction of available
energy sources worldwide combined with the high degree of external dependence and
the continuous increase of energy demand by European countries lead to the
development of the gas sector. Security of supply, organization of the energy market
under competitive conditions and environmental sustainability are the main concern
of the European Union in order to safeguard the public interest.
As much as human well-being, industrial competitiveness and society in general
depend on secure sustainable and economical energy, legislation is called upon to
rectify the problems faced in the energy market and to try to tackle existing functions
with immediate intervention. In such a context, the application of competition rules is
an extremely useful tool for restructuring the energy market, and in particular the gas
market, in terms of long-term contracts and the clauses that govern them. The
European Union regulatory framework for energy policy is called upon to emphasize
the limits of competition, taking into account the field of security of supply.
