Commercial Law, Banking Law, Arbitration/Mediation at the International Hellenic
University.
In this dissertation we will examine the use of arbitration both as a means of resolving
disputes involving blockchain technology (off-chain resolution of blockchain disputes)
and for new forms of on-chain dispute resolution. More specifically, in Chapter 1 of the
dissertation we briefly identify blockchain technology, its architecture and the way it
operates, as well as define the notion of cryptocurrencies. Moving on, in Chapter 2, we
examine the various applications of blockchain technology, as well as acknowledge the
challenges and legal issues that are likely to arise. Chapter 3 focuses on the use of
traditional international arbitration for the resolution of disputes involving blockchain
technology, especially those disputes concerning cryptocurrencies. Last but not least,
Chapter 4 of the dissertation focus on the use of blockchain technology for new forms
of on-chain dispute resolution, which involves solutions in which the equivalent of a
traditional arbitration award is automatically executed by a smart contract.
