Having a better process and means of integrating medical devices with electronic health records to
provide better care for the patients has been a very important topic as we continue to see an increased
number of medical devices being manufactured today. Also, for patients that have an implant, it’s very
important to know that the device is performing as stated and to have a way to track those patients so
that when the device gets recalled or updated, there could be a way to reach out to those patients so
that the devices can be taken out of them.
The ability to have system communication of the device UDI issuer agency system and the national
library of medicine device database (15) is important so that updates that the issuer agency gets from
the device manufacturing companies can be pushed to the national library of medical device database
for device record update. Also, having the electronic health records systems adopt FHIR is very
important to seamlessly consume device messages and updates when shared across different electronic
health records. Also, the adoption of sharing medical device information through the health information
exchange systems are very important, this will help information to be available at all systems across the
country so that whenever a patient that has medical devices implanted in them travel across different
state happens to end up in the hospital, the medical device information can help the providers to make
a better decision towards providing care for the patients. This can also apply in case of recall on the
devices and the patients happen to travel out of their jurisdiction, the providers in another state can
have the update in their systems and help to support with removing the device from the patient’s body
so that multiple harms wouldn’t be caused.
