This paper aims to present the application of 3D printing in Museums in terms of sustainable development as well as from the scope of Intellectual Property law that applies for the protection of the works coming from 3d printing process. The analysis starts with the establishment of this technology in the industry and the definition of 3d printing as a technical procedure including the different stages from 3d scanning to 3d printing. Then, the challenges of the introduction of 3d printing to museum sector are stated. The paper continues with the presentation of the basic applications of 3d printing in Museums, specifically for conservation, research, education and the museum experience, as well as in terms of sustainable development, referring to the contribution of 3d printing to climate action, innovation, equality, partnerships for museums. The second part of the dissertation focuses on the Intellectual Property issues concerning 3d printing and analyzes the rights of Copyright, Designs, Patents and Trademarks that apply for the protection of this technology, mentioning the scope of protection for every right and occurring exceptions that contribute to a better exploitation by museums.
