This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Classical Archaeology and
Ancient History of Macedonia, a postgraduate program of the International Hellenic
University. The study examines with two different subjects, the end of the Argead
dynasty after the death of the last Argead and the problem of the identity of the
occupant of tomb II in Vergina.
The selection of the current topic came up after a discussion of my main
affinities with my supervisor, professor Ioannis Xydopoulos. He enhanced my wish to
combine both a historical and an archaeological topic. Despite my specialization in
History, while attending the current program, Archaeοlogy soon became a very
exciting area to deal with, that helped me enormously to improve my knowledge as
tourist guide. What really fascinated me on this topic was the opportunity to
interlace History and Archaeology and explore their complementary nature to each
other.
The aim of this dissertation is to enlighten a turbulent period of time, the
aftermath of Alexander’s the Great death, and specifically the actions of the last
Argead offspring and the women related to them that defined the course of events
that followed. Additionally, I tried to display the different approaches regarding the
identity of the dead of tomb II in Vergina and to argue for or against them.
