This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Hospitality and Tourism Management at
the International Hellenic University. Since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis in China and the
impact of the pandemic on the tourism industry, it seems to have been significantly
underestimated. Even now, policymakers and tourism professionals do not fully understand
the scenarios and effects of the crisis, which will have an unprecedented impact on the
tourism industry. Understanding the level of potential impacts can help determine the extent
of current and future epidemic impacts on the tourism industry, which is particularly
important for the Greek economy. In this way, policy makers can design policies aimed at
capacity building and operational viability of the tourism sector in response to the COVID-19
crisis. Innovation and alternative forms of tourism can play an important role in combating
this pandemic crisis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the pandemic
due to COVID-19 on Greek tourism and specifically in the city of Heraklion, Crete. This
research was done on a theoretical level by describing the effects of COVID-19 on the Greek
economy and tourism and then through research. The research recorded the views of the
participants in it, through interviews, and answered the research questions they were
examining the day after the pandemic for tourism and which direction it will take in the
region of Heraklion, Crete.
