heal.abstract
This dissertation was written as part of the Master of Arts (MA) in Art, Law and Arts Management at the International Hellenic University. This thesis research suggests an exploratory approach to the interminable debate between fine arts and the world of fashion. Moreover, the dissertation’s purpose will constitute an attempt to demystify the value of conventional art -especially in the museum space- and to deconstruct the idea of fashion as “the specifical other art”. Additionally, it will be argued how fashion on display has an empowering capacity, by unrevealing the storytelling experiences of the couturiers along with its history. Fashion, in this context, is poised to assume the role of an inspiring and esthetically multilayered platform, that fosters the dialogue between the realms of fashion and art. Taking as a gospel the position that contemporary fashion exhibitions are perceived as new means of breeze air in the mono-vocal character of the elitist museums, this paper will acquire selected fashion exhibition cases. Hence, specific world-wide occasions, where haute couture is represented as an installation art, and its significance in showcasing the cultural and educational aspects that can be assimilated at immersive installations, such as those from the emblematic Dior, Balenciaga etc. Through the prism of modern fashion museology, finally, this paper analysis will unfold a debate where it is expected to evolve into a more nuanced and intellectual dialogue involving creators, audiences, and skeptical scholars.
