Initially, this paper will endeavor to approach the evolving concept of cultural heritage and how it is placed in the fast and evolving area of cultural heritage law. A further purpose of this dissertation is to provide an overall view of the attitude that international and regional organizations have developed towards protecting, preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage elements. It attempts to elaborate on the evolution of the Greek legal framework with special emphasis placed on recent laws. Raising awareness, sensitizing the public and creating cultural and public consciousness over antiquities is further considered and new measures are proposed to combat phenomena of illicit trafficking as well as alienation of the public towards cultural heritage.
